Even though there was no real reason for it, the Doctor felt guilty. It wasn’t as if he was having an affair because despite the fact that everyone in the neighbourhood seemed to think the Doctor and the Master were a couple, they weren’t. They just lived in the same house and the Doctor stayed at home because he hated even the thought of having a job, not because he was a housewife. And this woman he had met…well, she was wonderful.

Also, she wasn’t evil, which was a definite plus over the Master. He’d met her a couple weeks ago when he joined a book club for something else to do with his spare time and she’d appealed to him almost instantly when she helped him defeat the brain-absorbing alien that the head of the club had turned out to be. From that point on, their romance had been whirlwind: progressing quickly from world-saving and hand-holding to prolonged love-making sessions while the Master was away on his evil conferences or shagging the neighbour’s wife. At least the Doctor was pretty sure that was what he was doing.

Anyway, he was happy and there was clearly no reason for him to feel guilty and yet he still did.

Looking fondly over at the source of that guilt, he stroked her hair a little sadly.

“Mm…” she said, waking, and then rolled over and smiled sleepily at him. “Morning, Doctor,” she said, and then noticed the look on his face. “What is it?”

“I don’t know if I can keep doing this,” he said. “I’m constantly wracked by irrational guilt and that isn’t fair to you.”

“I’m fine,” she protested but the Doctor shook his head.

“No. It has to stop. You’ll thank me later.”

That evening, when the Master came home, he told him what had been going on.

“WHAT?” said the Master. “You broke it off?!” He shook his head despairingly. “You actually found someone who would shag you and you let moral guidelines get in the way of continued sex? Are we even the same SPECIES?”

The Doctor wished now that he had brought this up before he completely wrecked his relationship. At least he’d always have the memories.

A single tear slipped from his eye as he pondered what he had lost: his love, his hope, his Rose.

“I liked you better when you were getting laid,” the Master snorted. “Pansy.”
